OAK BROOK, Ill. – Radiologist Franz J. Wippold II, M.D., from the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSTL) in St. Louis, Mo., will bring his medical expertise to Brazil as part of the International Visiting Professor Program offered by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). The program fosters international relations among radiology societies to assist with medical education in developing and newly developed nations.

Dr. Wippold, chief of neuroradiology at WUSTL, will be joined by two fellow radiologists as he embarks October 7 on the 10-day trip. He will spend his visit giving presentations and teaching intensive seminars to radiology residents, as well as attending conferences and meetings.

The program is mutually beneficial. The visiting team of radiologists informs local doctors and hospitals about the latest advances in diagnostic and therapeutic radiology. In turn, the visiting professors experience firsthand the obstacles faced by medical professionals in the host countries.

"The RSNA International Visiting Professor Program has proactively embraced the growing global radiology community and I am honored and thrilled to participate in this extremely worthwhile effort," Dr. Wippold said. "This program is important to me because it provides an opportunity for forming close relationships with our international partners. In previous years, I have found that teaching the many eager foreign trainees very gratifying. More importantly, I have learned much from our enthusiastic hosts and have come to appreciate new perspectives in our field. The experience is both enlightening and energizing, and I look forward to visiting Brazil."

In addition to speaking at the Brazilian Congress of Radiology (CBR) conference in Rio de Janiero, Dr. Wippold will spend his trip teaching and attending meetings at the Hospital de Base in Brasília.

Dr. Wippold, who is also professor of radiology at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, will be accompanied by Thomas W. Hash II, M.D., from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and Emily F. Conant, M.D., from Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa.

The International Visiting Professor Program was founded in 1986 and is administered by RSNA's Committee on International Relations and Education. This program is supported by Agfa HealthCare.
