RSNA 2016 Looks Beyond Imaging

RSNA 2016 is taking shape with timely topics. In addition to the many honored lectures and plenary sessions, scientific presentations, and educational courses and exhibits, the Board has approved Special Interest Session topics to include Image Wisely® and Image Gently®, value over volume in patient care, psychiatric neuroscience, an introduction to QIBA, and understanding the new American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines. A number of Controversies and Hot Topics sessions were also approved. The RSNA/AAPM Symposium will focus on precision imaging in medicine. Virtual Meeting Expanding

Due to the growing popularity of the Virtual Meeting option for meeting attendees and others, virtual offerings will be expanded to 80 courses during RSNA 2016, and on-demand courses will be available for three weeks following the annual meeting.

2016 RSNA Editorial Fellows Announced

Meike Willemijn Vernooij, M.D., Ph.D., has been named the 2016 RSNA William R. Eyler Editorial Fellow, and Karen Buch, M.D., is the 2016 RSNA William W. Olmsted Trainee Editorial Fellow.

Dr. Vernooij is a neuroradiologist, head and neck radiologist and associate professor in radiology at Erasmus MC University Medical Center, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Dr. Buch is a clinical fellow and graduate assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Both fellows will work with Radiology editor Herbert Y. Kressel, M.D., in Boston, and RadioGraphics editor Jeffrey S. Klein, M.D., in Burlington, Vt.

Derek Harwood-Nash Fellowship Program Expanded

The number of Derek Harwood-Nash fellowships will increase from three to four beginning in 2017. The program provides funding for promising international radiology scholars to study at North American institutions for a period of six to 12 weeks. The fellowship honors the memory of former RSNA Board of Directors member Derek C. Harwood-Nash, M.D., Ch.B., D.Sc., who was a long-time goodwill ambassador for radiology and encouraged worldwide cooperation among radiologists. Established in 1998, the fellowship has been awarded to 36 fellows from 24 nations.

RSNA 2015 Radiation Safety Education Exhibit Series Available on Image Wisely

A curated series of radiation dose and safety education exhibits from the RSNA 2015 annual meeting now can be accessed via ImageWisely.org, an initiative of the RSNA, ACR, AAPM and ASRT to raise awareness and provide educational resources for medical professionals on the use of ionizing radiation in adult medical imaging examinations. Additional RSNA 2015 education exhibits will be posted over the next few months. Access is free and does not require login.

RSNA Collaborations around the Globe

RSNA is represented at meetings around the world, including upcoming conferences of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, July 31-August 4, where president Richard L. Baron, M.D., is speaking; the Asian Oceanian Society of Radiology (AOSR), August 19-21, where RSNA and AOSR are sponsoring a joint symposium on the role of imaging in transplantation of the liver to be repeated at RSNA 2016; and the Korean Society of Radiology, September 21-24, where select RSNA 2015 digital posters will be presented. Other meetings with RSNA participation include the Interamerican College of Radiology, September 8-10; the International Congress of Radiology, September 21-24; the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, October 13-16; the Journées Francophones de Radiologie, October 14-17, and more.

RSNA's International Visiting Professors

In September, RSNA's International Visiting Professors (IVP) program is sponsoring a team of three radiologists to present, teach and learn at radiology departments and meetings in Mongolia, and two radiologists to do the same in Mexico. The IVP program fosters international relations among radiology societies to assist with medical education in developing and newly developed nations. The Mongolia program is supported by Fujifilm Medical Systems, and the Mexico program is supported by Agfa HealthCare.
