OAK BROOK, Ill. (June 22, 2011) — The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research and Education (R&E) Foundation will fund 74 grants totaling nearly $2.7 million in 2011, the largest amount ever granted by the Foundation in a single year.

"The record amount of grant giving supported by the R&E Foundation this year highlights the commitment of the RSNA membership and RSNA Board of Directors to imaging-related research and to the young investigators who represent our specialty's future," said 2011 RSNA President, Burton P. Drayer, M.D.

Projects funded by R&E Foundation grants will have an impact on translational research and clinical outcomes and cover a wide range of research and education topics, including molecular imaging, comparative effectiveness and resident education.

Grants provided by the R&E Foundation serve as seed grants to launch young careers. Every dollar awarded to a grantee by the R&E Foundation generates more than $30 in subsequent funding from sources including National Institutes of Health, government agencies, corporations and private foundations.

In 2011, R&E Foundation grants will be awarded to individuals at 46 institutions. The Foundation received nearly 200 grant applications for the current year, demonstrating the critical demand for grant funding in academic institutions.

Since its inception in 1984, the R&E Foundation has awarded more than $34 million in grant awards to over 900 investigators and educators, enabling more than $1 billion in additional research. Grant funding is made possible by the support of thousands of individuals, private practices and corporations that share in the R&E Foundation's mission to improve patient care.
